Women at risk of domestic violence often show signs of distress. Unfortunately, all segments of society share these signs of devastating abuse. The Moved to Serve International team, led by Bárbara, raises a powerful voice to generate global awareness about the tragedy of domestic violence and child abuse. These processes are cyclical. When violent situations erupt, abusers often work to resolve and appease their victims. Even when the police are involved, the tragic reality is often that the family becomes a victim of abusive behavior over and over again.
Domestic violence is at epidemic levels worldwide. Characterized as spousal or partner violence, domestic violence can include violence against children, adults, and the elderly. Insidious in nature, domestic violence can encompass sexual, physical, mental, verbal, emotional, as well as religious and economic abuse.
The United Nations Development Fund for Women estimates that at least one in three women worldwide will be beaten, raped, or abused during their lifetime. In most cases, the abuser is a member of their own family.
There is an 85% chance that abusers exhibit abusive behavior because they themselves have previously experienced aggression. Uncensored communication and social media open a wide door for the increase of abusive behaviors.
When an offender intentionally harms a child, whether physically, psychologically, or sexually, including acts of neglect, the crime is referred to as child abuse. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in five children experiences sexual abuse before they reach the age of 17.
The global implications of domestic violence and child abuse are vast. Cultural challenges impact different geographic regions of the world in distinctive ways. Currently, there is particular concern for Hispanic and American populations. Poor Latino families often do not speak out or report abuse. Women who are being abused hesitate to disclose and accuse the abuse of themselves and their children because they are terrified of the prospect of deportation.
